Was genau macht sie stolz?

A Midsummer Night's Nightmare

This week my pottery class took place the last time before summer break, so I did not start a new project. I worked a bit on my cachepot, mainly I did some carving and a little sanding on the rim, so it's ready for bisque firing. I also completed the work on my rooster.

I painted it with manganese dioxide (At least I think that's what this substance is. It's called Braunstein in German.) I hope I don't reveal too much when I tell you I already used this stuff for my secret surprise, which is finished now. (Perhaps I can show it here quite soon, so you can see what I blabber about all the time.) It did not break to pieces in process and luckily it has no cracks! I'm very pleased with it, but the decoration lacks some contrast due to the fact that I used manganese dioxide for the first time and couldn't estimate the effect of it properly. Everything I do still is very experimental. Now my rooster is the next try. I painted it with this stuff, especially the carvings and then smudged and washed off most of the paint with a sponge, which makes it look more grubby than I intended. After firing it should look a little brighter.

Despite avoiding heavy claywork this time my wrists feel like I had a brutal fight and also my right elbow cries for some rest, so I guess from the physical point of view I need this break now very badly but I have so many ideas in my mind that make it feel like an unfair restriction to my creative needs. But in fact also mentally I need a break, but there certainly will be no holidays. For weeks and even months I'm not able to sleep soundly and I'm getting more and more tired. I can sleep, but it seems I totally skip the phases of relaxing deep sleep and instead stress myself by dreaming several extremely weird and very cinematographic action films and thrillers a night, containing a great deal of violence, cruelty, suspense and twists. I wish I'd be able to write a script of them, so they would be at least good for something. Those scenes don't resemble my everyday life very much, but they sharpen the atmosphere of it and I guess some of the things that occupy my mind at day (and in my opinion aren't publicly aware enough) transform to those nightmares and still keep my mind busy at night, but without finding a solution.
I think of Pablo Picasso's "Guernica" a lot (and about how warmongers deal with it) and about how seldom current war crimes and social conditions are reflected in art. (I myself don't even know how to do it.) Some of the best and most commonly known examples certainly are the works of Banksy (I spent yesterday evening with his book again.) but I don't know of many more contemporary artists with an impact and it bothers me.

Saunassa*

*In the Sauna

Where do I go, living in an area, that is hit by a proper heatwave (It's a bit cooler now, but still no rain in sight.) which replaces the fine scents of summer with the smell of forest fires much too often, feeling sleepy and drowsy all the time? Right, I went straight to a studio that has two massive kilns firing. Sweat was streaming down my body, I still felt dehydrated the next morning.

I tried to make a cachepot this time. I bought a flowerpot lately because I want to repot a plant but then I thought, before I do this I can use it as a form. I prepared a paper stencil of the sides of the pot so I was able to cut the shapes easily from slabs of clay without measuring too much. When everything was cut I wrapped the stencil around the pot as some sort of releasing agent between pot and clay so the clay won't stick. This worked quite well, I just needed help to roll the clay flat. First I tried to do this myself, because I always feel stupid asking for help but I can't do this at all. My wrists complained vehemently, although I am not even able to build up enough pressure to flatten the clay even slightly. I hope the seams where the slabs meet are stable enough. The clay dried so fast in the heat, it might crack.

I decorated the pot all over with flowery indentations but not as carefully as I wanted to. I ran out of time again and felt exhausted. I guess some of the markings might not be deep enough to be clearly visible when the pot is finished.
My secret surprise and my rooster still waited to get fired in the kiln, so there's nothing new to tell.
I considered taking a break this time because my hands badly need one but next week the class is going to take place the last time before summer break (I feel really sad about this.) and I want to hold out until then.

Morning Glory

What's the story? My twiner no. 4 is blooming now and revealing its name this way. It's Trichterwinde in German (literally translated this would mean something like funneltwiner), a name that describes very well its most obvious characteristic features.

The blossoms look like pretty tiny gramophones, so you'd expect delicate fairies to swing in front of them listening to a low sweet melody. I found out that Morning Glory is the English name of this plant and it also fits very well, as the splendour already withers in the afternoon.

I already picked the first peas. They grew from those I used for decoration in this picture. They are so delicious!

Amazing Glaze

When I came to the pottery this time three finished bowls awaited me!

I especially love my pierced bowl. The holes are like little green windows and I like the overall look of it.

One of my claymates said, she admires the things I do and even for this bowl alone would accept me immediately as her daughter-in-law! I never received a compliment like this before. Feels quite strange but flattering. The others don't offer me a place in their families but I'm getting quite a lot of positive feedback when they look at my pieces and I'm very glad about it but I never know what to say!

Here's the bowl with indentations of cloves at the bottom.

I like this transparent green glaze very much! It has such a nice fine crackle and gives depth to the pattern.

This bowl was made the same day when I tried out new tools to mark the clay but most of the impressions are drowned in glaze and not visible anymore. It's a pity and it looks a bit ugly at first sight but a closer look reveals its beauty. I'm fascinated and amazed by the patterns and reactions the thick glaze left when it flooded the dents. This is so gorgeous!

I'm growing more and more fond of the unintended wonkiness of this bowl. It looks rather organic, very natural and it fits perfectly into my hand.

I didn't start anything new this time. I was fully stretched working on my secret surprise. It survived drying and bisque firing without complications, but perhaps I messed it up now, using a technique I never tried before. I guess the result will look a bit different from what I had in mind, but nevertheless I hope it will look good. Well, I'll see next time.

I also proceeded with the work on my rooster. It was bone-dry now and I spent a lot of time refining the carvings I made in a hurry last time. Scratching the dry and extremely fragile clay leisurely with a sharp tool taking care not to break off the beak, comb or the tail of my bird was not an easy thing to do. I feel another forced break coming. I guess there aren't a lot of changes visible in the photo but to me it looks a lot neater now.

p.s.: I plucked my first tomato today (but I feel bad to eat it right away, so it's lying in the wonky bowl now)!

My Green Oasis

I haven't bored you with my balcony gardening for a while, so here we go!

Compare this picture to the one I took a month ago! My tomato plants grew enormously since then! I bet you are glad now that I spared you all the stages inbetween, haha! But, really, I feel sort of proud of my dears and can totally understand why Prince Charles likes to talk to his plants, (if the rumours are true). In the picture are five plants of three sorts of tomatoes and you can even spot some radish and on the right you can see a bit of one of my three pea ships. (I love fresh peas!) Here's a closer look on sailer number three that makes it quite clear why I gave them that name.

Pea ship number two is in the middle of this view from inside of my room. In the background are twiners and climbers. The one to which most of the leaves belong surprises me every day. It is sprouting new tentacles all the time. I've counted more than twenty so far. I have no idea what this plant is called. It was along with the others in a seedbag my mother gave me and that did only state there are seeds of twiners inside but not which ones exactly. I sorted them and gave them numbers (This is no. 4) so I'll know later what kind of plant belongs to each of the seeds. On the left are my other two tomatoes. Here's a view from another perspective:

They won't grow much taller than this. In the right corner grows a sunflower.
Remember when I showed you my first tomato of the year? Do you want to know what it looks like now? (Don't say no!)

It's the one that blushed in front of my camera. Now that you saw my tomato you surely want to know how my bell pepper is doing!

It's doing very fine and got siblings now!
It's very hot weather and the air smells of the finest summery scents but it is very fatigueing also. I feel a lot like the cat that lives in my neighbourhood and tries too cool down by lying flat on stones in the shadow. Sometimes I can barely keep my eyes open.

(Waiting for my latest pottery adventures? I'll write about them very soon.)

Blog Rockin' Beads

A few weeks ago I gave you a sneak peek to my beadmaking. I worked a lot on them every once in a while because I had a deadline for an order by my own personal patroness of the arts. (Woohoo! It feels very, very good if someone really likes what you do!) Many months ago I read a blog post by Humblebeads, who makes stunning polymer clay beads, titled "100 beads before breakfast". This line entered my mind again while I worked on my beads and I asked myself if this is really possible to do. 10 beads before supper is quite a lot for me and 100 beads within a month proved to be an impossible task, but nevertheless besides my usual tantalising difficulties I was really glad and enjoyed rolling a few beads every now and again. There are 91 beads of different sizes in this picture.

I made a nice bunch of bookmarks of them and they have arrived in the UK already and should find new and hopefully happy owners soon! You can take a closer look at all of them, and separately on the blue batch, the orange batch and the colourful rest in my Flickr photos! I want to make more!
